Sky Hopinka: Languages of Sky (October 2 – November 17)

The Saint Louis Poetry Center and Webster University’s Kooyumjian Gallery presents Sky Hopinka: Languages of Sky October 2 - November 17!

This exhibition is a collaborative event celebrating the poetry and visual works of the acclaimed artist.

Internationally-celebrated, award-winning, Sky Hopinka is a filmmaker, photographer and writer whose work centers on Indigenous homeland, landscape and language. Hopinka, who previously taught the Indigenous language Chinuk Wawa in Portland, Oregon, has screened his media work at the Sundance, Toronto and New York film festivals.

A member of the Ho-Chunk Nation and Pechanga Band of Luiseño Indians, Hopinka is a MacArthur and Guggenheim fellow and received the Alpert Award for Film/Video and the International Center of Photography's Infinity Award in Art. Known for his experimental and lyrical work exploring Native American history and life, Hopinka won a MacArthur "Genius" Grant in 2022 for his works like Kicking the Clouds, a 15-minute video featuring audio of his grandmother being taught her ancestral language, woven together with his own poetry.
