Hear from Dr. Lucy Sutherland about the evolving role of botanical gardens in global biodiversity and plant conservation, and how these collections-based institutions are responding to contemporary challenges. Dr. Sutherland will explore the power of partnerships and international collaboration in shaping a shared future for plants and people. Garden President Emeritus Dr. Peter Wyse Jackson will introduce Dr. Sutherland.

About the SpeakerDr. Lucy Sutherland is the Director of the National Botanic Garden of Wales, a bilingual institution committed to advancing and sharing knowledge in the science of plants and inspiring people’s appreciation of flora, Welsh culture, and heritage to enrich lives. Dr. Sutherland’s career spans senior executive roles in botanic gardens including as the Director of the Botanic Gardens and State Herbarium in South Australia. She was also an executive at the Australian National Botanic Gardens, leading the establishment of the Australian Seed Bank Partnership.
Dr. Sutherland has been a Non-Executive Director on various boards for not-for-profit organizations. She has also been an expert advisor and elected representative on intergovernmental committees. She is passionate about botanic gardens and how these collections-based institutions adapt and evolve to meet society’s needs by bringing together the sciences, arts and design in ways that connect and inspire communities with the botanical world and address contemporary challenges such as plant conservation, ecological restoration and changing climates.
Dr. Sutherland holds a research Masters and PhD in botanic garden management and has published in several related areas including biodiversity conservation, interpretation, collections, access and benefit sharing, seed banking and ecotourism.
